Enjoy And Be Educated: The Breakdown
Writted by: DJ Unexpected
You Must Learn (Intro)- I wanted to jump right into the music and created a brief, but explanatory intro. With KRS-One and movie dialog helping, I wanted to drive home the focus on being educated and teaching vs. solely being out for profit.
Island Of Influence (Reggae Breaks)
The mixtape series I’m notorious for is Look What I Found, which focuses on samples used by artists to create today’s hits. With this section, I wanted to put a spin on it by focusing on Reggae samples. It’s a known fact that Hip Hop derives from Jamaican roots, so what better way to showcase that relation than with this section. See if you recognize them all…
Priceless Plates (Dubplate Remixes)
With the last section boasting “a lot of Soundboy ah get dust out tonight” (many weaker sound crews will get eliminated tonight), it’s only natural to focus on a sound crew’s main weapon-dubplates. These are recreated hits by an artist with custom made lyrics promoting one sound crew and chastising the rest. These plates help one crew edge out the others in a dance (party), as indicated in the opening interlude. With the exception of Capleton’s “Rob It” and Turbulence’s “Notorious”, all dubplates were created for my side project, Calamity Sound (which has released 2 mixtapes under that umbrella as well- Every Shade Has A Story: Jamaica and The Sound Of Victory) and have been remixed.
Kung Fu(nk) (Martial Arts Breaks)
My partner-in-crime Hevehitta takes control on this one. He is an avid Martial Arts film collector like myself, and chose to play some of Martial Arts movie’s most known opening intros. With the trailer for Master Of The Flying Guillotine setting the mood, he jumps right into some of the well known songs used by the Shaw Brothers studio, with some infamous Kung-Fu sound effects mixed in for good measure.
Exercising With The Nautilus (The Genius Of Bob James)
Hevehitta is once again at the helm for this section. Any Hip Hop fan (DJ, MC or producer) should be aware of Mr. James’s genius; particularly for “Nautilus”, a 1974 end-of-the-album song that has become one of his most sampled songs in Hip Hop history. According the opening interlude, Bob James wasn’t aware of the impact his song had until recently. Following is the now classic tune itself, as well as the songs that used various parts of his song.
Heart In A Blender (R&B Remixes By Guest DJ Two Stacks)
DJ Two Stacks is 1/2 of the producing duo “Hook N Eye Productions”, and is a frequent guest on Diggers Union projects. Here, we chose to feature part of his recently released mix, “Heart In A Blender” focusing on R&B blends. The instrumentals used complement the vocals wonderfully, and recapture that 90′s mixtape sound we’ve grown to love and appreciate.
Living In The World Of Hip-Hop (Exclusives and Remixes)
To close out the project, we focus on a genre which embraces all others superbly, Hip-Hop. With custom freestyles and drops from various artists featured, we kept true to the mixtape format so successful in the glory days of mixtapes, and unfortunately abandoned for the most part today. All of the demonstrated elements, should help you to “ENJOY AND BE EDUCATED”.
